Tehani buchanan of forever yours
What led you to set up a business offering funeral stationery?
After the death of my grandmother and godmother and doing their funeral sheets, my sister and I realised there was a need for high quality, personalised funeral programs.
Who has been an important mentor?
My Mum. She has her own business and has provided advice and encouragement.
Which strengths and skills have served you well?
I have a full-time job as a teacher which requires me to be super organised. I've found this skill invaluable in running my own business. Balancing the two roles can be a mission!
Why did you decide to focus on an online business?
I think online is the way of the future. It enables us to reach a national and global audience. I also wanted to make it easy for my customers to contact us and for it to be a one-stop shop for them.
What sets you apart from your competitors?
I believe it's the fact we offer bespoke and high quality funeral stationery. What we create is unique and personal to each family and beautifully crafted from start to finish.
Do you have any advice you think everyone with their own business would find useful?
Know when to shut off. It's easy to fall into the trap of working day and night because you have all these ideas and you're passionate about what you're doing. You have to be careful you don't set yourself up for burnout.
Can you recall a particularly memorable moment since you founded Forever Yours?
There have been many. One that touched me was when a family member cried with appreciation on seeing their loved one's funeral program for the first time. I'm really humbled when families love the service sheets we create for them.
What do you find most rewarding about having your own business?
Being responsible for your own success and/or failures and not having to answer to anybody!
When you have a day off, what do you choose to do?
I don't have much time off because I work full-time as well as play netball competitively but I must admit sleeping in is one of my favourite pastimes. If my partner, Ivan, is also on holiday we like a nice brunch (I love trying new cafes and restaurants), finished off with a movie at home.
Do you have a favourite book or music?
I really love reading history and culture books particularly on the Cook Islands or New Zealand. My favourite music would probably be the entire Lauryn Hill album, 'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill'.
